Come Closer by Sara Gran – a book review
It is time for my review of Come Closer by Sara Gran. Are you ready? Okay. Let’s go.This is another one that I only read due to an upcoming class I’m taking (like Bird Box). And it was a ton of fun. It’s not the sort of stuff I usually enjoy. This one isn’t as ‘out there’ as some of the cosmic horror and weird fiction I love. It is still horrifying, but in a ‘quiet exorcist’ sort of way. (I called it, the next big genre: quiet exorcist.)This one starts off a little slow, and took me a couple sittings to really get pulled in. But once things were really spinning out of control for the main character I was hooked. I read the last 60% of the book in one sitting. What makes this one fun? Oh, the normal demonic possession stuff. That’s in there. But how it is presented is the butter cream frosting on the Catholic sponge cake. And it is completely different from My Best Friend’s Exorcism by Grady Hendrix. In Come Closer you are getting the story from the perspective of the possessed, and it is utterly horrifying. It taps into one of the most base of human fears: the complete loss of self control.
In Conclusion
So, what’s my final verdict. This is another one you really should check out. It hits all of the marks, and then some, on a great possession narrative. I give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
